Mike Spooner

My interest in the tiny house movement started when Jay Shafer built his first Tumbleweed years ago. I dreamed of designing and building my own tiny home until 2016 when I started to turn that dream into a reality. I finished ProcessHouse, my first build, in 2020, followed by a Prius camper build-out 2 years later. Now I am putting the skills I’ve gained and passion for creating functional and beautiful small spaces towards Teaspoon Dwellings, building unique tiny homes and camper conversions and sharing low-tech innovations in ecosan and simple livingideas that aim to bring us into better alignment with our environment and ourselves.

My core values are: Authenticity, Mindfulness, Beauty, Exploration, and Resourcefulness (AMBER). My goal is to reflect these values in everything I create.

Blocking & Sheathing

After all framing was up, I started on two rows of blocking–pieces of 2x4 material fit between each stud and run horizontally along the length of each wall. Most codes specify that all edges of each panel of sheathing should land on solid blocking. This makes the structure much stronger. This will also give me solid backing to attach my interior plywood to. Because of the height of my walls, I determined that I would need two rows of… View More

Walls!

First wall framed

The past 2-3 weeks has been focused on wall construction, with three wall segments now standing and one nearing completion. Before I began on the walls, I still had a few decisions to make. This ended up taking longer and being more stressful than I had anticipated. The main decision I faced was the interplay of the interior headroom, roof pitch, and wall height. My design (which I’ll show more of soon) features a roof that… View More

Some thoughts on the process so far

First, thanks to my dad (Jon) for stepping in and giving this blog a second life. Before my dad picked it back up, I had resigned myself to the fact that I was going to have to make some sacrifices in order to make ProcessHouse into a reality and not just a blog. Unfortunately, one of those sacrifices was, in fact, blogging. However, as my father and I began construction back in May, I discovered he… View More

Model 3 (Changing Plans)

This long, cold, and (very) snowy Winter has given me plenty of time to think and re-think my tiny house plans. All that thinking has led me to explore some totally new ideas, culminating in an alternate design which actually has its basis in some of my earliest plans from a year ago, but draws heavily on the experience I’ve gained while working on the model I’ve been featuring on this blog. While I love much about… View More

Tiny House Loft (Re)design

June 2016 Update: The design I am building has changed once again and will be entirely different from the one pictured here. I’m keeping the new design under wraps for now–hopefully you will enjoy seeing it revealed as it is built! Ok, so let me be honest: the loft in my tiny house has always been a bit of an afterthought. In fact, my design in its original form bypassed the loft altogether.… View More

Next Steps

Future site of ProcessHouse?

Well, it’s official–Autumn is upon us. As I’m using these crisp, cool fall days to wrap up some smaller projects around my parent’s house (good practice for what’s to come), I’m starting to think about how to best spend the next 6 months to be ready to start construction on the tiny house come Spring/Summer 2015. Here’s a partial list of what I’m going to be working on over the… View More

Tiny House Design Goals

Design is part aesthetics (making stuff “look pretty” as one of my coworkers likes to put it) and part problem solving (making it function well). As a web designer, this is something I know intimately. But most problems can be solved in more than one way. So how do you choose from multiple solutions? I encounter such design problems every day, and my approach to these situations is to try and find solutions that… View More
